`The Bug Theatre’s Sweet 16 Birthday Party & Fundraiser ( August 15)

`The Bug Theatre’s Sweet 16 Birthday Party & Fundraiser

To celebrate sixteen sweet years as Denver's most unique neighborhood theater, The Bug is throwing a one-of-a-kind party and you’re invited!

While The Bug is still relatively young, our faithful building is not. It's almost 100 years-old. As you can imagine, it is in need of some improvements to make it more comfortable for our patrons and more energy-efficient for Mother Earth (and our bottom line!). All proceeds from the night will go towards helping us make that possible.

Hosted by Freak Train’s Gerree Hinshaw, our Sweet 16 Birthday Party & Fundraiser on August 15, 2010, is a celebration like only The Bug can do: film, live theatre, music, dance, performance art, poetry and, of course, freaks.

This spectacular and unique variety show starts at 7:00 p.m. and features everything that makes The Bug Denver’s favorite neighborhood theater. In addition to the show, we'll be having a cocktail/social hour from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We’ll have cool prize giveaways and a silent auction. Come see the mind boggling cross-section of entertainment that has been flourishing at the one of a kind Bug Theatre for the past 16 years.

And this is all for just a suggested donation of $25 per person (tax deductible). Reservations are strongly suggested as space is limited. Please call 303 477-9984 or go to www.bugtheatre.org  for more info.

A Funny Thing Happened - Forum/Vintage Theatre July 2 - Aug 8

Vintage Theatre Presents
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum
Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Directed by Linda Suttle
Choreographed by Kendra Jacobs

"Tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!" “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” is simply one of the best musical comedies ever. This Roman farce revolves around Pseudolus (Bernie Cardell), a slave who will do almost anything to gain his freedom. When Pseudolus is left in charge of his owner's young son Hero (Rob Rehburg), who has fallen madly in love with the beautiful courtesan Philia (Kelly Twedt), the fun begins. The young boy promises Pseudolus his freedom if he can arrange a marriage before his father returns. Pseudolus, of course, agrees. But not even the conniving slave can foresee the tangled web that he is about to weave.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” which was the first Broadway production to boast music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, drew most of its farcical situations directly from the plays of Titus Maccius Plautus (254 BC-184 BC). The writers, hoping to give Broadway a taste of what once convulsed ancient Roman audiences, carefully studied all 21 of Plautus' surviving comedies and then created their own original story, drawing characters and situations freely from many of the old scripts.

With its unforgettable zany characters, a hysterical, perfectly constructed book by Larry Gelbart (of “MASH” and “City Of Angels” fame) and Burt Shevelove Forum is full of outrageous gags, gorgeous girls, and mistaken identities, stunning surprises, cunning disguises and such keen witted Sondheim songs as “Comedy Tonight,” “Bring Me My Bride,” “Lovely,” “Pretty Little Picture” and “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid”.

Four actors, stools, a piano and a healthy dose of attitude are all you need to enter the witty, wicked, offbeat and thoroughly twisted world of famed satirical songwriter Tom Lehrer. Tomfoolery musical review include some of these well known classics “The Vatican Rag,” “Be Prepared,” “My Home Town,” “Pollution,” “She's My Girl,” “The Hunting Song,” and“We Will All Go Together When We Go.”

The cast, under the direction of Wade P. Wood, and the musical direction of Don Wagner includes Henrik Boes, Clark Bomer Brittain, Paula Jayne Friedland and Amanda Goldrick with choreography by Missy Moore.

Tom Lehrer is an American singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist, and mathematician. He has lectured on mathematics and musical theater. Lehrer is best known for the pithy, humorous songs he recorded in the 1950s and 1960s. His work often parodies popular song forms, such as in "The Elements," where he sets the names of the chemical elements to the tune of the "Major-General's Song" from Gilbert and Sullivan's “The Pirates of Penzance.” Lehrer's earlier work typically dealt with non-topical subject matter and was noted for its black humor, seen in songs such as "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park". In the 1960s, he produced a number of songs dealing with social and political issues of the day, particularly when he wrote for the U.S. version of the television show “That Was The Week That Was.”

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $18 for Adults; $14 for Seniors (60+)/Students and available by calling 303-674-4934 or online at www.evergreenplayers.org . “Urinetown” begins with a friendly welcome from our narrator, Officer Lockstock. Officer Lockstock (David Blumenstock) and the adorable moppet Little Sally (Rachel Graham) fill us in on the back story. As the result of a terrible water shortage, private toilets have become unthinkable and all restroom activities are handled through a private corporation! This hilarious comedy features a satirical look at the corporate world, incorporating sight gags and parodies of musical theatre conventions, in general, and Les Miserables, in particular, and makes jokes that poke fun at the show itself. Follow us to a funny, foreboding future filled with ...symbolism - where public bathrooms are controlled by private business, and where it has now become a privilege to pee!

The cast includes Brad Wagner (Bobby Strong), Rebecca Donnella (Hope Cladwell), Richard Beall (Caldwell B. Cladwell), Donna Worley (Penelope Pennywise), Gregg Dudding (Officer Barrel), Ken Paul (McQueen), Alissa Tegeder (Senator Fipp), Cody Robinson (Old Man Strong/Hot Blades Harry), Ami Hall (Josephine Strong/Old Woman), Matthew D. Cahill (Robby the Stockfish/UGC 2), Kellie Stern (Soupy Sue/Cladwell's Secretary), Brian Sides (Tiny Tom/Dr. Billeaux), Juliette Petersen (Little Becky Two Shoes), Josh Holcomb (Billy Boy Bill/UGC 1) and Ensemble members Sonsharae Tull and Devon Moody.

“Urinetown, The Musical” was produced on Broadway in September 2001 by the Araca Group and Dodger Theatricals in association with TheatreDreams, Inc. and Lauren Mitchell. It ran on Broadway through January 18, 2004, closing with a total of 25 previews and 965 performances. In 2002, the musical was nominated for a whopping nine Tony Awards©, winning three, for Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.

King Lear / Colo Shakespeare Fest July 1 - Aug 8

King Lear
by William Shakespeare
Directed by Lynne Collins

One of the most powerful dramas in Western literature, King Lear is both an intimate family drama and an explosive political epic. Beginning with a monarch’s division of his kingdom among his three daughters, Shakespeare’s tragedy examines the tempest in one man’s mind as his family disintegrates, his country is ripped apart by petty ambitions, and the very universe itself seems to unravel around him. Lear explores the most basic questions of human existence: love and duty, power and loss, good and evil.

Measure For Measure/Colo Shakespeare Fest ( July 15 - August 6)

Measure For Measure

by William Shakespeare

Directed by Scott Williams

Measure for Measure is one of Shakespeare's most provocative and unclassifiable dramas touching on themes of religion and government, injustice and mercy. A young man, whose fiancé is pregnant, is sentenced to death for sexual relations outside of marriage. His pious sister pleads for his life with the all-powerful regent who offers her a ghastly deal: will she sacrifice her virginity to save her brother? Wickedly stimulating, Measure for Measure is full of surprises, gasps and guffaws to delight.

Murderer/Firehouse Theater Company (July 9 - August 7 )

Murderer
by Anthony Schaffer
Directed by Stacey Nelms
July 9 - August 7, 2010
An unusual and macabre beginning to this play sets the audience's nerves twitching well before any dialogue confuses theirs minds! Norman apparently murders his mistress, Millie, and is in the process of disposing of the body when he is interrupted by a Sergeant Stenning. Norman's hobby is to reenact the most bizarre murders of history. Norman's intentions are, however, more realistic and his wife's elaborate hoax of yet another murder to cure him of his addiction not only cements his resolve but almost provides his alibi for her own demise.

Nunsense/ Southern Co Rep Theatre July 2 - Aug 14

Southern Colorados Repertory Theatre
7/2-8/14
Nunsense

it all begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials.

The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices;

a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.

Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon.

With more than 5000 productions worldwide, it has been translated into 21 language. It was the winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Off Broadway Musical in its original New York Production.

It’s zany and outrageous fun, but be warned.. it’s habit forming!

Our Town / Colo Shakespeare Fest ( July 16 - August 4)

Our Town

by Thornton Wilder

Directed by Victoria Erville

First produced in 1938, the Pulitzer-Prize winning Our Town has become an American stage treasure. The play – Wilder’s best-known and most frequently performed work - reveals the ordinary lives of the people in the small town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. Our Town defies most conventional theatrical genres - it is neither a comedy nor a tragedy, neither a romance nor a farce. It is, rather, a contemplative work and richly timeless commentary on nothing less than the tragicomedy of human existence.

Squabbles/ Southern Co Rep Theatre ( July 22 - August 12)

Southern Colorado Repertory Theare

Squabbles

July 22- August 12

This hilarious play pits a father in law against a mother in a comedic succession of squabbles.

Jerry Sloan is a successful writer of advertising jingles married to an equally successful lawyer. Living with the happy couple is the not so happy Abe Dreyfus, Jerry's curmudgeon of a father in law. Abe is a funny guy to the audience, not to Jerry.

The situation is exacerbated when Jerry's mother Mildred loses her house in a fire and needs a place to stay. Abe and Mildred can't stand each other.

This play is one hilarious confrontation after another until the heart warming finale in which the oldsters discover that, really, each is not so bad.

The Taming of the Shrew / Colo Shakespeare Fest ( July 9 - August 6)

The Taming of the Shrew

by William Shakespeare

Directed by Stephanie Shine

One of Shakespeare’s earliest and more popular comedies, The Taming of the Shrew bursts with disguise, deception and devilment. A playfully provocative battle of the sexes pits the shrewish Kate against the fortune-seeking Petruchio. But just who is taming whom? Unlike other romantic comedies, the play does not stop with the wedding. Shakespeare considers the institution of marriage, the rifts between men and women, and the rough journey toward love.

TRINIDAD, CO – Southern Colorado Repertory Theatre’s new Children’s Theatre Company (CTW) will premiere a new family musical production titled “PINOCCHIO II”, which was written by Michael Lance and will be directed CTW director Melissa Graves. “PINOCCHIO II” is a family oriented production that takes off from the classic story.
The scene starts in a modern-day toyshop and, like the storybook character he is named after, Pinocchio wants to be a real boy. His wish is granted by a sarcastic, cigar-puffing member of the Good Fairies Local #192 and together they embark on an adventure that takes Pinocchio to an orphans home, the crazy world of TV commercials, and finally to becoming the owner of a rundown toy factory. This fast moving, fun-filled fantasy is highlighted by ten dynamite musical numbers. Audiences of all ages love this show. It’s a story of friendship, music, dance and inspiration.
The production showcases young performers from the CTW workshop program, a summer theatre training program for youth interested in theatre.
There will be two performances of “PINOCCHIO II” at the Trinidad Middle School Auditorium:
Sunday, August 8 at 7:00 p.m.
Monday, August 9, at 7:00 p.m.
General Admission tickets are on sale now at $9.50 for adults, and $5 for ages 5 to 18. Children age 5 and under may enter at no charge, but must be ticketed in advance.
